Clear Answers About Cloudy Vision

Cataracts are one of the most common reasons vision gets blurry, dim, or full of glare as we age. Dr. Jacquelyn Lamigo and Dr. Christie Stemmle check how far a cataract has progressed, help you decide when surgery makes sense, and co-manage your surgery with a top ophthalmologist. If haze develops after surgery, we can treat it with an in-office YAG laser procedure.

What is a cataract?

A cataract is a clouding of the eye's natural lens, which sits behind the pupil. It makes vision blurry, dim, or hazy. At Southside Eyecare & Optical in Anchorage, our doctors evaluate whether you are a candidate for cataract surgery and co-manage surgical cases with top local ophthalmologists.

Guidance From First Signs to Surgery

Not every cataract needs surgery right away. We check your vision and eye health, talk through how your eyesight affects daily life, and help you decide on timing. When you are ready, we co-manage your care with a top Anchorage ophthalmologist. Our doctors are also certified in YAG laser capsulotomy, an in-office treatment for the haze that can develop after cataract surgery.

Signs of a Cataract

Cataracts usually develop slowly. Common signs include:

- Blurry, cloudy, or dim vision

- Colors that look faded or yellowed

- Glare and halos around lights, especially when driving at night

- Needing more light to read

- Frequent changes in your glasses prescription

- Double vision in one eye

Age is the most common cause. Eye injuries, diabetes, smoking, long-term steroid use, and years of sun exposure can also play a role.

When Is Cataract Surgery Needed?

Early on, a new prescription or anti-glare lenses may be all you need. When glare or poor vision starts to make everyday things hard, like driving, reading, or working, even with updated glasses, you may be a candidate for surgery.

Cataract surgery replaces the cloudy lens with a clear artificial lens, and it is one of the most common surgeries in the United States. We co-manage surgical cases with top ophthalmologists in Anchorage, so you have a doctor you know guiding you through the process.

Hazy Vision After Cataract Surgery

Some people notice their vision getting hazy again months or years after cataract surgery. This is usually not the cataract coming back. It is a clouding of the thin membrane that holds the new lens in place, called posterior capsule opacification.

It can be treated with a quick in-office laser procedure called YAG capsulotomy. Dr. Lamigo and Dr. Stemmle are both certified to perform it at our Anchorage office.

How do I know if I need cataract surgery?

If your vision gets in the way of daily tasks even with updated glasses, it is a good time for an evaluation. Our doctors will check how far the cataract has progressed and talk through your options.

Does insurance cover cataract care?

Cataract evaluations are medical care and are usually billed to your medical insurance. Medicare typically covers medically necessary cataract surgery. Our front desk can help you understand your coverage before your visit.
